Ingredients

  • 1 can (120g) - Sardines in water, drained
  • A handful of fresh parsley
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) - Olive oil
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) - Lemon juice (for humans)
  • 1 - Small cucumber
  • 1 - Avocado
  • 10 - Cherry tomatoes
  • 1/4 - Red onion
  • Optional for humans: A pinch of sea salt, black pepper and a sprinkle of crushed red pepper flakes
  • Directions

    1. Finely chop the fresh parsley. Keep some whole leaves for the cat's portion.
    2. Finely chop the red onion.
    3. Dice the cucumber and avocado.
    4. Half the tomatoes.
    5. In a bowl, gently flake the sardines with a fork. Mix in whole parsley leaves for the cat's portion and set aside a suitable amount.
    6. To the remaining sardines in the bowl, add the finely chopped parsley, diced cucumber, diced avocado, halved cherry tomatoes, and chopped red onion.
    7. Drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice.
    8. Season with fresh ground black pepper, a pinch of sea salt, and a sprinkle of crushed red pepper flakes for a bit of heat (if desired).
    9. Serve the plain sardine and parsley mix to your cat. Ensure the cat’s portion remains simple and free from onions, garlic, and excessive oil or lemon juice, as these can be harmful to cats.
    10. For human servings, toss the enhanced salad well to combine the flavors and serve immediately.

Cooking tips for cats and humans:

Avoid harmful ingredients: Avoid avocado and anything containing caffeine or alcohol as these can be harmful to your cats. Onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes and raisins as well as certain nuts can be deadly.

Seasoning: Keep dishes bland for pets. Cats can be very sensitive to salt and spices, which can cause gastrointestinal upset. It’s best to remove a portion for your dog before adding any seasonings for your own servings.

Consult your vet: New foods should always be checked with a veterinary doctor before being fed to cats. This is important because it ensures safety and proper measurements, especially considering that different animals have varying nutritional needs based on health condition, age and size.
